BARRY LEWIS
Barry Lewis was born in 1967 in the Rhondda Valley South Wales where he still lives and works, creating his sculptures from his studio in his back garden.
"Im a bit of an outsider artist, having come to sculpture through engineering and carpentry, although much of my carpentry career involved creating scenery and props for the theatre, opera and some television and film work. I have also worked in display carpentry working on projects in large London stores such as Harrods. Here I worked on the Christmas grotto and various window displays (In fact, I've worked in every window in the shop!)
Over the last twelve years I've taken part in a great many exhibitions in England and Wales and also France. I also quite often show my work at music festivals, especially Glastonbury.
I've worked in stone and several other minerals such as alabaster, conemara marble ect. I've also worked as a full time ice sculptor. I've sculpted a lot in wood but im best known for my recycled metal creatures and a series of lifesize robotic people which I call the bolt-on wanderers.
"The Idea of recycling is central to my work and the resulting mixture of materials, their age and previous uses of the objects incorporated in the sculptures adds another dimension. I find it funny to see people's reaction to an object they may have in their house that is now part of a giraffe's nose! For example, "Oh, it's a meat mincer!"
I also enjoy combining the very old and the very new. For example, an 18th Century door hinge may be joined between 21st Century stainless steel cutlery. It's all about transformation and reclamation, where the ordinary and utilitarian become unexpectedly and suprisingly brought to life."
